Concentration Camps in the U.S.

All Things Considered, February 9, 2007 · A change in immigration policy now allows families who are in the U.S. illegally to be detained. Last summer, Immigration and Customs Enforcement began holding entire families, including small children, at a converted prison outside of Austin, Texas.

Officials say that before the facility opened, illegal immigrants with children were often released with a notice to appear before an immigration judge. But the immigrants rarely made their court dates.

Greg Mead, director of the Hutto Family Residential Facility, says the facility is crucial to make sure these illegal immigrants don't disappear.

But the facility, a converted high-security prison, is coming under increased criticism. Attorneys for the detainees, many of whom are seeking political asylum, say it is abhorrent that small children, including babies, are being incarcerated.

The Hutto facility currently holds 375 people, more than 200 of them children; its maximum capacity is listed at 512 people. Everyone, from adults to children to infants, wears uniforms of either blue or green.

Today, for the first time, the federal government allowed reporters to tour the facility. The journalists were not allowed to speak to the families being held there, however — a policy that officials said was meant to protect their privacy.

What is happening here? Have we lost our moral compass entirely?

Herding people into 'holding pens' like cattle while the INS figures out who can stay and who gets deported is Nazi-esque behavior from an increasingly vicious, corrupt and downright mean Federal Government.

Soon the KBR 'holding pens' will be available allowing the capture and incarceration of entire families to be expanded even further. Concentration Camps in the USA has become a real, not just imagined reality.

Slowly, deliberately this country is being taken over by fascists intent on dominance and control of its' people. Gonzo's Goon Squads are out and about, rounding up 'illegal aliens' and holding them indefinitely.

Who is safe from this American Gestapo?

DEN, they did it before, they'll do it again. Something weird, the new season of 24 brings the subject of concentration camps right up front, and it is scary. WTF are they up to?

Prison gets major contract

By Kurt Johnson, Taylor Daily Press, Taylor, TX

The T. Don Hutto prison facility in Taylor won't be closing anytime soon.

The private prison, which is owned by Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), has finalized a contract with the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency to hold illegal immigrants.

According to Kim Porter, a CCA spokesman, the contract calls for holding up to 600 prisoners, which means a slight modification of the facility to achieve the additional beds needed.

“There will be a substantial addition to staff,” Porter said. “The number of employees at the facility will increase from the 40 people we presently have to approximately 200.”

According to Louise Gilchrist, director of marketing for CCA, the addition of staff at the Taylor facility will be on a “ramp-up” basis as new inmates are added.

“We won't be hiring all the new employees at once,” Gilchrist said.

Gilchrist said workers previously employed at the T. Don Hutto prison and in other CCA facilities will be evaluated based on their qualifications.

“Obviously, if they have corrections job experience and have experience with us, they will be high on our list,” Gilchrist said. “As in the past, we'll also be using the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) to receive applications.”

A spokesperson at TWC in Taylor said CCA has used TWC as an application gateway in the past. The positions haven't been posted, however, because CCA must submit the job descriptions and other information for the positions to be listed.

According to the TWC spokesperson, after CCA submits its paperwork, the positions will be listed on the TWC Web site, www.workintexas.com. The TWC representative said because of the statewide scope of the TWC applications process, CCA should have enough qualified applicants to fill the available positions.

Because the federal contract requires the approval of the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, it is necessary for Williamson County to sponsor the arrangement and perform administrative duties related to the contract. County commissioners approved the contract and agreed to serve in the administrative role at their regular meeting Tuesday.

Rick Zinsmeyer, director of the county's Community Supervision and Corrections Department, told commissioners the county would receive about $200,000 per year from CCA for handling administrative tasks related to its role as the interface between ICE and CCA.

Interviewed after the county approved the contract, Porter said the contract with ICE is a “continuing agreement” with no specific term.

“Because of the volume of immigration detainees we'll continue to have, I guess you could call it a long-term contract from that standpoint,” Porter said.

According to Porter, one of the selling points for CCA getting the contract at its Taylor facility is the proximity to the Texas-Mexico border.

“The kind of immigration and customs enforcement that the federal government currently is experiencing on the border places the T. Don Hutto facility in the right spot for this program,” Porter said. “There's also a possibility that ICE will set up an office in Taylor related to the county's secure border initiative involving illegal immigration.”

The future of CCA's Taylor facility has been in limbo the last several months because of a lack of inmates. During that time, CCA has been marketing the prison actively to use all the available space.

Without any inmates, CCA would have implemented a mothballing plan for the facility, using only a skeleton staff to maintain it so it wouldn't fall into disrepair.

Most recently, the prison housed inmates that had to be relocated from the Gulf Coast as result of hurricanes Rita and Katrina. Prior to that, the facility held prisoners for the U.S. Marshal's Service, and it also held inmates from the overflow at the Williamson County jail.

DEN, you might be surprised that I watch such a propaganda riddled program like 24, but here's the thing, it seems to present the overall state of America. Last season was a surprise because the culprit behind everything was the President. Talk about deja vu. I rent the DVD's from Netflix because I can't stand the network commercials, so far this year they have blown a nuclear device in Valencia CA, and I will admit, my heart nearly jumped right out of my chest. I know for a fact, if that ever happens in this country, it won't be the work of freedom hating Arabs, but it will be the work of freedom haters. I don't know if they are trying to prepare the people or warn them, either way it's bad.

The immigration story is going to be big this year because it really illustrates the ruthlessness and heartlessness of this administration. The minorities in this nation are being harrassed, imprisoned and abused openly and this administration is ok with it.

Here's another big story.

Gonzales' sacking of US Attorneys like a 'coup d'etat'

Carey said...

Yes Jeanne, I was just going to write that. I told you guys about the phone call I got from Brian Bilbray's office calling for a phone/town discussion on immigration. Bilbray's an icky, icky person. The issue of immigration is heating up behind the scenes geared toward the 2008 election.

Once we put the INS under the aegis of Homeland Security, we were in trouble. Such prisons as Hutto will pop up everywhere. Immigrants have no rights anymore. Hell, look at the Padilla case, U.S. citizens have no habeas corpus anymore.

Got lots of stuff to do today with Brandon. I wanted to make sure all of you had a good read of what the Defense Department Investigation actually said yesterday. NOTE THE FRIDAY RELEASE, by the way. This is major shit. It shows why David Corn's book is so seminal, Hubris.

The Libby trial has brought Cheney's cabal forward. The administration is trying everything to block the news, but reporters, THANK GOD, are catching on why this is such a big story.

I'm writing this with "Yu Gi Oh" blaring in the background. Not easy.

Pentagon's Aide's Prewar Work Faulted

Its findings lend credence to charges by White House critics that Feith, who has since left the department, was out of line when he sought to discredit analyses by CIA intelligence officials that discounted alleged ties between Al Qaeda and then-Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

Feith, in responding to the investigation, defended his actions and said he was pleased that the report found he had done nothing illegal.

'Alternative intelligence'

The report says that Feith's office "developed, produced and then disseminated alternative intelligence assessments on the Iraq and Al Qaeda relationship, which included some conclusions that were inconsistent with the consensus of the intelligence community."

Giving Care, Getting Care

“Baby Boomers” are earning a new nickname, “The Sandwich Generation.” Many are caring for aging parents, raising their own children and working full or part time.

Consider these troubling statistics from the Family Caregiver Alliance for 2005: About 44 million American families and friends help someone sick or disabled. Nearly one-quarter of households care for someone over 50. These statistics will continue to grow.

This effort takes a physical, mental and financial toll on those who schedule 24-hour-a-day care for their loved ones, but don’t look after themselves.

Terry Team, director of the Waynesboro, Virginia, Daily Living Center, says, “A support network is very important. Family and friends forget they need a break. …Learn to reach out.”

If you’re a caregiver ask for support. If you see someone else struggling to care for a loved one, offer your time and help.

Those who honor their father atone for sins, and those who respect their mother are like those who lay up treasure. (Sirach 3:3-4)

Heavenly Father, remind caregivers to share their burdens with others for their own good and the good of their loved ones.

We should not only care for our parents and children; we should also care for all of God's chilren.

Children Making A Difference

Daniel Spencer became a 12-year-old philanthropist to help keep a sibling-support group running at the University Children’s Hospital in Irvine, California.

He set up a series of lemonade stands, enlisted a supervising adult for each and several young friends as volunteers. Nicknamed Pucker Up For Kids, the group raised $973.

“It felt so good to be able to help people,” said Daniel.

Diana Ayala was 15 when diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare cancer of the bones and soft tissues that eventually killed her. While she was still able, she wanted to make an impact on further research into her cancer.

She organized a one-day bake sale to raise money. Diana Ayala raised $8,500.

Youngsters often have the necessary persistence, passion and compassion to act as catalysts for positive change. Encourage them.

I was overjoyed to find some of your children walking in the truth. (2 John 4)

Abba, remind parents to support their children’s good deeds in word and action.

How Well Do You Work?

Someone, somewhere, benefits by every task that is performed well. Every job has the potential to improve this world. However, it’s up to each of us how well our own work is done.

John Gardner, Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare under President Lyndon Johnson, and founder of Common Cause, observed: “The society which scorns excellence in plumbing because plumbing is a humble activity and tolerates shoddiness in philosophy because it is an exalted activity will have neither good plumbing nor good philosophy. Neither its pipes nor its theories will hold water.”

Knowing a job is well done is one of the great satisfactions of life. More than that, we owe it to those who depend on us for quality. When others fail to do their best for us, we notice it quickly enough. Let’s make an effort to be just as aware of our job’s own standards.?

All are skillful in their own work. Without them no city can be inhabited. (Sirach 38:31-32)

Holy God, help me be part of Your on-going work of creation by working to the best of my ability.

Better be careful Sal, getting roped into TV world is no where near reality, when is the last time you saw Keifer take a piss break? or a dump, or simply blow his nose.

Times up!

Nada, never. Remember West Wing carried some parallels with the Clinton bunch too.

Right now there is enough real ugly reality to make ones head explode attempting to take it all in.

I wish someone could predict what will happen so we can head it off before it happens. There are still 'real' dedicated individuals putting their lives on the line to prevent a 24 scenario right now.

Scary-ass world right now.

DEN, I'm the last person in the world who would EVER get roped into the "TV world!" The point I am trying to make is that this particular program seems to take the horrible realities of political corruption, torture, racism, terrorism, etc. present the differing views of the characters towards all the scandals and fears, and put them right in your face. You have some demanding that all Muslims be locked up, no questions asked, then you have others railing against it. You see innocent people arrested and held without charge, warrantless searches, idiot officials with too much power, torture that doesn't work, all the things you read about everyday played out. It is as close to the new reality as the TV is likely to get, but my question is, why are they doing it? Whether Bauer takes a pee break doesn't matter, how many TV characters do that anyway? I also like the program Bones, but they make quite a few mistakes, mostly concerning ballistics, but it's Hollywood, I don't expect technical perfection! My main interest is how the people react to all this. I know it is fiction, but it is eerily similar to reality, and many people are unaware of what's going on. It's just not like TV to put so much effort into awakening the sheep. Or, are they trying to create acceptance? Know thine enemy. There are just so many.
